Current fMRI neuroimaging software programs offer the researcher a wealth of analysis methods and tools. However, the incompatibilities in user interface, data format, and computing environment in these tools make it difficult if not impossible for most researchers to take advantage of the full set of tools available for neuroimaging analyses. This software development project addresses this problem by creating a common, graphical, user friendly environment, the "analysis desktop", in which it is easy to incorporate, use and combine analysis tools developed by independent research laboratories. Because neuroimaging analysis methodologies are rapidly evolving, the analysis desktop is modular, extensible, and user configurable to accommodate new analysis tools. In order to meet the demands of highly computationally intensive applications, the desktop will extend to a CORBA compliant client/server architecture and support parallel processing. One of the major stumbling blocks to successful integration of analysis programs from different analysis packages is the conversion between the different data formats. The desktop will include a format conversion utility for the major fMRI data formats to facilitate interoperability between analysis packages.
