Work in the Van Essen laboratory related to the Human Brain Project involves the development and application of computerized methods for mapping the cerebral cortex in monkeys and humans. Our primary focus is on the use of surface-based representations, because these allow the cortex to be viewed in a variety of configurations while respecting the topology of the cortical sheet.
<p>
Surface-based analyses provide a systematic and objective way to deal with the high degree of individual variability in the pattern of cortical convolutions. They also provide ways to make comparisons across species that take into account differences in folding patterns and in the relative size and location of different functional subdivisions.
