*********** DRIFTING GRATING EXPERIMENT ON AN X CELL ****************
*************************************************************************

Reproduction of the experiment of EnrothCugell-Robson66, page 527.

Spatial parameters of the X cell (number 128), as approximated by the authors:
sigma_int = 0.37 deg
sigma_ext=1.5 deg
(so, surround-sigma__deg = sqrt(1.5^2 - 0.37^2) ==1.45 deg )

Our chosen conversion scale: 2 pixels per degree.

grating temporal freq= 4 Hz.
grating_contrast=0.4 as defined by (Lmax-Lmin)/(Lmax+Lmin)

grating spatial frequencies respectively
0.12, 0.36, 1.1 and 2 cycles per degree.

We chose a conversion of 5 pixels per degree, so the corresponding grating
periods in pixels are:
42 pix, 14 pix, 4.5 pix and 2.5 pix

all the following commands must be executed in THIS directory.

(1) YOU MUST CREATE THE 4 DRIFTING GRATINGS FRAMES BY TYPING

./make_stimuli

All cell parameters are defined in file ./test_X_cell.xml. You do not have to touch it, yet you should open it to see the parameters used for the cell.

(2) LAUNCHING THE TEST:

each experiment is repeated 10 times to obtain an averaged firing rate (command -tr 10)

Note that -r 1, to impose a single repetition of each grating frame.
Also note -b 0.5, meaning that graphical representations starts after 500 ms, to avoid the initial synchrony of spikes over the trials.

mkdir ./results_freq_0.36
mkdir ./results_freq_0.12
mkdir ./results_freq_1.1
mkdir ./results_freq_2

With more trials, to produce nice figures:

../../local/bin/TestGanglionCell -i ./appearing_stim_phase0.txt -ret ./test_X_cell.xml -tr 50 -outD ./results_phase0 -r 1 -nS 1 -b 0.5 -nodisp

../../local/bin/TestGanglionCell -i ./appearing_stim_phase0.5Pi.txt -ret ./test_X_cell.xml  -tr 50 -outD ./results_phase0.5Pi -r 1 -nS 1 -b 0.5 -nodisp

../../local/bin/TestGanglionCell -i ./appearing_stim_phasePi.txt -ret ./test_X_cell.xml -tr 50 -outD ./results_phasePi -r 1 -nS 1 -b 0.5 -nodisp

../../local/bin/TestGanglionCell -i ./appearing_stim_phase1.5Pi.txt -ret ./test_X_cell.xml  -tr 50 -outD ./results_phase1.5Pi -r 1 -nS 1 -b 0.5 -nodisp
